Driving Innovation from Within a Company

    By Maja Colak | Articles, Landing | 1 comment | 15 May, 2018 | 5

You have an awesome business idea or a technology you are eagerly waiting to start working on, but no time or opportunity for realizing your intentions? Are you working on a new product that could conquer the market, but you can’t find the time and money needed to bring your idea to life? Well, future Bill Gates, you came to the right place. codecentric is here to help their employees drive their ideas to the next level.

20 percent time and innovation budget at codecentric

At codecentric, we understand that technologies are ever changing and the pace of change is getting faster every year, which is why we will continue to invest in knowledge leadership and innovation. Driving new ideas and being creative is a core element of our company. As many of you know, we implemented Google’s famous 20 percent time policy where every employee is encouraged to take one day a week to educate oneself, go to a conference or a workshop, share new ideas with colleagues and create demo versions of personal projects.

Certainly, you will go through a rather easy process where you will present and scope your topic which should be relevant and descriptive enough. You will have all the support and resources needed before your, so called, pitch.

You have a good idea, now what?

To give some perspective to the story, here are a couple of teams that are currently active on projects that came from 4+1 time. We have Blockchain, ModulAr, PLC4X and codecentric AI teams. Stories from those teams will follow soon.

Let’s say you came up with a great idea – it could be about a brand new disruptive business model, but it could also be some kind of innovation in our core business or an open source component. When the project becomes very extensive, time-consuming and resource-intensive and realization during the 4+1 time is not possible, we have an innovation budget accessible to all employees.

Even if you are not there yet with your own idea, worry not. There is always an option of joining colleagues who are already working on a project of their own, so you can bring your talents to the table.

    The importance of innovation

In today’s fast-changing business world, where businesses thrive and collapse quicker than ever, the only thing that is constant is change. In order to survive, a business has to tap into the power of innovation. Having said that, we want everybody within our company to have a chance of using the innovation budget and to accelerate their ideas. Our ultimate goal here is to make new technologies accessible to our colleagues.
